COD MW4 Multiplayer Modes
Launch announcement scope. A confirmed mode is not a guarantee that a specific public playlist is active at this moment.
MW4’s launch mode briefing separates respawn modes from round-based play. Start with Team Deathmatch for eliminations, Domination or Hardpoint for repeated objective fights, and Search & Destroy or Collateral for single-life decisions. Ground War Combat Outpost uses larger teams and vehicles; Gunfight uses equal supplied loadouts.
Respawn modes
On a small screen, scroll the table sideways to read every column.
| Mode | Core task | Choose it for |
|---|---|---|
| Team Deathmatch | Score through enemy eliminations | Repeated team fights without a carry objective |
| Domination | Capture and hold flags | Sustained area control |
| Hardpoint | Contest and hold the active objective | Rotating team objectives |
| Kill Confirmed | Collect enemy Dog Tags and deny allied tags | Eliminations that require a follow-up pickup |
| Free-for-All | Compete individually | No team dependence |
| Frontline | Eliminate enemies from fixed team bases; kills outside base count for more, with a side swap halfway to the score limit | Forward pressure with predictable home spawns |
| Inflation | Eliminate enemies and collect cash; the wealthiest team wins at time, while rich High Value Targets reveal their position | Hunt wealthy opponents and protect your team’s cash through the late multipliers |
| Hijack | Carry the Spike to the enemy Comm Station and protect the upload | An attack-and-defend delivery objective |

Round-based and equal-loadout options
On a small screen, scroll the table sideways to read every column.
| Mode | Respawns / loadouts | Decision to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Search & Destroy | Single-life rounds; bomb sites | Commit carefully and work with surviving teammates |
| Collateral | No respawns, custom loadouts, Killstreaks or automatic health regeneration | Start with a Pistol and $800; buy equipment with earned cash, lose gear on death, retain money between rounds |
| Gunfight | Equal loadouts change every two rounds | Eliminate opponents or contest the overtime flag after the 50-second round; briefing gives six rounds to win |
Large-scale combat, party play and training
Ground War’s Combat Outpost uses 32v32 teams, vehicles and a capture objective, with a published 20-minute time limit and 1,500-point score target. It suits a player looking for a broader battlefield instead of the close Core pool.
Gun Game is the briefing’s party option. Proving Grounds is the training entry, useful for learning before choosing a competitive ruleset. These serve different goals from a single-life Collateral match.
Hardcore and later additions
Hardcore changes the eligible modes through a limited HUD, friendly fire, lower health and no health regeneration. It is a rules variant; the name does not create a second version of every map.
Possession and Infected are described as pre-Season 1 additions rather than launch-day membership. Use the current in-game playlist selection for availability, while keeping this page’s dated launch roster distinct.
