COD MW4 Crossplay & Friends
MW4-specific Activision Support account and communication articles, reread October 23. No unverified console-only queue or platform-specific toggle path is supplied.
MW4’s official account guide supports online friends across platforms through an Activision account. Use the complete Activision ID, including its numeric suffix, in the Social menu rather than assuming a matching Steam name or console gamertag identifies the right person. Online progression belongs to that Activision account; crossplay does not supply a second platform’s game purchase.
Find the correct friend and enter the same party
Check each player’s Activision ID
Find the ID in the Account Summary or Activision Account view. Copy the complete name and numeric suffix; two players can share the visible name while having different IDs.
Accept the request and choose the friend
The other player accepts through Social. Use the resulting Activision friend entry for the party invitation; confirm that both players appear in the same party before the leader enters the intended online mode.

When the friend or voice connection is missing
Check the exact ID first. Then inspect blocked-player status in Social: Activision says a block prevents communication and invites and removes the player from the Activision Friends List, while leaving a platform friend list separate.
Platform account settings can override in-game communication settings. In Settings → Audio → Voice Chat, Party Only limits voice to your party, and Friends Only limits it to friends. An inability to hear a nearby opponent is not proof that crossplay matchmaking is disabled.
The sources here do not establish a universal crossplay-disable path for every MW4 platform. Avoid copying a menu from the 2019 game or assuming that turning voice off changes who can enter a match. Also check the selected mode’s published party limits.
Playing together, keeping progress and buying the game
Online progression follows the same Activision account across platforms linked to it. The official warning is explicit: linking a platform to a different Activision account does not carry the original account’s progress over. Use the Beta account again to keep its earned bonus content.
Each player still needs the appropriate game entitlement and online service access. Qualifying Xbox digital purchases have the stated Xbox Play Anywhere coverage; that is a purchase condition, not a promise that any Steam or PlayStation order grants every other version. Check editions and platform coverage before buying.
